Description

PHO Grand Rounds: Antimicrobial Stewardship in Long-Term Care: From Evidence to Practice

Antibiotic overuse contributes to increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance. Fifty percent of antibiotics used in long-term care homes (LTCHs) are not needed. Residents in homes with higher antibiotic use experience a greater risk of antibiotic-related harm.

Presenters will share the results of a systematic review evaluating activities to improve the appropriateness of antibiotic use in LTCHs, provide an overview of antibiotic use patterns across LTCHs in the province and share practical resources to help implementation of antibiotic stewardship in this setting.

Presenters: Julie HC Wu, Dr. Nick Daneman and Bradley Langford

Julie is a Research Coordinator in the Infection Prevention and Control Research team at Public Health Ontario (PHO). Her work at PHO is mainly focused on antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. Prior to joining PHO in 2014, she worked at Cochrane - Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Group and Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Nick Daneman is a Clinician Scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the University of Toronto, and an Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. His research program is focused on optimizing the prevention and treatment of health care associated infections, with particular interest in C. difficile infections, infections of critical care, surgical site infections, and antibiotic stewardship.

Bradley is a Pharmacist Consultant with Public Health Ontario's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. He is also the lead antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (Toronto), where he helped to build an antimicrobial stewardship program. His research and practice focus on implementation and evaluation of antibiotic stewardship initiatives across all healthcare sectors.
